CIRCLEVILLE, OH - The Lady Trailblazers were edged out in their season opener by visiting Ohio University Lancaster on Thursday night, falling by a score of 72-65 in the first day of the Think Pink Classic.
Ohio Christian (0-1) played even with OU-L to start and were deadlocked through the first ten minutes of play. Lancaster then put together a strong run, fueled by three point shooting, to close the half with a 38-26 lead.
Lancaster extended their lead to as many as 16 points early on in the second half. With their backs against the wall, the OCU defense would respond with grit and determination. The Blazer defense stormed back and began to chip away at the 16 point deficit, holding OU-L without a basket for seven minutes to eventually tie the score at 55-55.
As the Blazers found their defensive intensity, they also started hitting shots on the offensive end. A pair of three pointers by Shekinah Alexander would put the Trailblazers ahead by one point. Another pair of threes by Abbey Fox would put the Trailblazers ahead by 5 points with less than five minutes remaining.
Lancaster answered back as they found their offensive flow again behind Paige Stought who finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds. A three point basket and a pair of layups put OU-L ahead by 5 points with one minute remaining. After a timeout, OCU set up for a three point basket off of a set play but the shot was off the mark. OCU was forced to foul and Lancaster went on to win 72-65.
Shekinah Alexander paced OCU with 17 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Asia Woodson added 11 points and 5 rebounds. Abbey Fox and Sarah Bechtel each tallied 8 points. Maritza Will had a team high 10 rebounds to go along with 7 points.
The Trailblazers are back in action on Friday night when they host Central Christian College of the Bible at 8:00 PM.
