KNOXVILLE, TN - For the first time ever, Ohio Christian University enjoyed a sweep of the Mid-East Region Men's and Women's Soccer Championships on Saturday afternoon as both teams earned automatic bids to NCCAA Nationals.
The OCU women got things off to an exciting start as they took on a scrappy KCU squad. The Trailblazers advanced after coming out on top in a shootout against Kentucky Christian University.
The Blazers edged out the Knights in the shootout to claim the regional banner. Both teams finished tied at 0-0 after regulation and a pair of overtimes, forcing the shootout.
The OCU men will also be making the trip to Florida. The Blazers defeated KCU 1-0 on Saturday, earning another Mid-East Region Championship. The game was knotted at 0-0 until an OCU attack triggered by an Alex Marstiller cross, resulted in a deflection off of the KCU keeper for an own goal, giving the Trailblazers a 1-0 lead.
The Ohio Christian defense was solid the rest of the way as the Blazers had yet another shutout in regional play. The OCU men will head to Florida with a senior class that will be playing in their 4th straight NCCAA National Tournament.
Both teams will now prepare and focus on getting ready for the National Tournament. The NCCAA national office will announce tournament seeding in the next two days.
