WILMORE, KY - Ohio Christian took another NAIA team to the brink on Saturday afternoon, falling to Union College (10-2) from Kentucky by a score of 94-91. Union had come into the game after a win last week over NAIA #20, Tennessee Wesleyan University.
The Trailblazers found themselves trailing by 13 points in the first half with 11:38 remaining. Trailing 28-15, OCU fought back over the next 7 minutes. A basket by Wesley Russell capped off a 17-4 run by OCU to tie the game at 32-32 with 5:18 remaining in the half.
The Trailblazers took their biggest lead of the game on a three pointer by Evin Bartlett just one minute into the second half. The six point advantage at 50-44 with 19:08 remaining was OCU's largest lead of the contest.
Union then stole momentum over the next 15 minutes, as they worked to build a commanding 89-75 lead with 4:30 remaining in the game. With their backs against the wall, Ohio Christian rallied to get back in the game.
An Ernie McCoy basket with 36 seconds remaining highlighted a 16-4 OCU run in the final four minutes. Trailing 93-91, OCU was forced to foul and sended Union to the line with only 23 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs went one of two from the line to take a 94-91 lead. Ohio Christian called a timeout and setup a play to tie the game. OCU had two good looks at a three point basket to tie but the final shot was off the mark. Union escaped with the 94-91 win.
Wesley Russell led OCU with 22 points, 9 assists, and 5 rebounds. Evin Bartlett tallied 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting. Ernie McCoy added 16 points on 4 of 7 shooting for OCU. Evan Mills and Danny Schrock each tossed in 8 points.
The Trailblazers are back in action on Friday as they travel to Campbellsville University in Kentucky for a 7:00 PM game.
