CIRCLEVILLE, OH - Chris McIlroy was brilliant over 7 and 2/3 innings on Thursday night as OCU fell to Wilmington College by a score of 1-0. McIlroy opened up the game by throwing 7 innings of shutout baseball while allowing only one hit. He went on to stike out 3 batters and allowed only one earned run and two hits over nearly 8 innings of work.
Ohio Christian and Wilmington were knotted up at 1-1 heading into the top of the 8th inning. Wilmington reached base initially on a walk and followed that up with a slow dribbler to the right of the mound that would result in an OCU throwing error. With runners on the corners and two outs, Wilmington then sprayed a soft blooper to right that landed on the edge of the infield dirt, to score their first run of the game.
OCU went to the bullpen as Wilmington has runners on the corners with two outs and a 1-0 lead. Zach Williams answered the call by getting the Blazers out of back to back jams in both the 8th and 9th innings. Williams struck out one batter and retired three others as OCU worked out of two situations where Wilmington had runners on the corners with two outs.
Heading into the bottom of the 9th inning, OCU trailed 1-0. The Trailblazers reached first base and were able to advance the runner to second base on a sacrifice bunt. With the tying run on 2nd base and one out, the Trailblazers were unable to capitalize. Wilmington retired the final two batters to come away with the 1-0 win.
