XENIA, OH - OCU Athletics spent the weekend at Athletes in Action Headquarters in Xenia, Ohio for a few days of team building and spiritual renewal. The summer retreat was an opportunity for Ohio Christian student-athletes and coaches to focus on competing for Christ. The goal is the continued development of indigenous leadership within OCU athletics to build a Christ-centered team culture across the department.
In addition to several team building activities and competitions, participants heard from Athletes in Action speakers and staff members. Those sessions challenged participants to compete for Christ and commit to playing for an Audience of One. They challenged attendees to have the proper motivation in their athletic pursuits beyond just personal achievement. Athletes were challenged to be "windows for Christ" on the field and not become walls to what God wants to do.
OCU coaches and athletes opened up to each other during team building activities and challenges. One challenge in particular asked participants to open up and publicly share their personal history, heartache, highlights, and heroes. As each attendee shared their story, the group would end the time of sharing with a thunderous group clap.
The retreat ended with coaches and student leaders building a practical strategic plan to continue this Christ-centered focus into the school year. Several new strategies that will impact the athletic department and teams will be implemented in the coming weeks to grow and expand the Audience of One culture on the OCU campus.
With a renewed spirit and a sense purpose and unity, this could shape up to being one of the best years ever for OCU Athletics.
